The citizens of the member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) do not need a student visa to enter Hungary. (For further regulations see EU and EEA citizens.)

Students coming from other countries must arrange their student visa before arriving to Hungary. Please, make sure that your passport is valid for at least 18 month and hand in your application for the student visa well in advance. Arranging your visa may take 60 days(!), although it is usually issued within 4 weeks. Please, do not forget that if you are transiting other countries or foreign airports you might need a transit visa also!

Being a member of the EU and NATO, Hungary was obliged to introduce new, stricter regulations for visa and immigration in order to fulfill the common security standards and regulations of the countries belonging to these organizations.

STUDENT VISA PROCEDURES

Please arrange a valid passport in advance and it is essential that you indicate the details of the same passport on the application form, which you will take to Hungary. (You also have to bring your passport to the entrance examination.)

Students accepted to any of the universities will receive an official Letter of Acceptance from the university in English and in Hungarian.
After receiving the Letter of Acceptance, please arrange your payment as it is stated in the Appendix 1. enclosed to your Acceptance Letter.

You are asked to hand in your application for visa to the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate in your country as soon as possible. If there is no embassy or consulate where you live, you can hand it in to a Hungarian honorary consul. You can find the list of the embassies and consulates on the following web site:

The D5 is a multiple entry student visa, which entitles you to enter and leave Hungary as many times as you want until it is valid. During the first year of your stay in Hungary your student visa will have to be replaced by a residence permit. While applying for the visa, please have a passport valid for at least 18 months, but preferably valid until the end of your entire study.

Needed for student visa:

1. visa application form
   
2. passport (must be valid for at least 18 months, but preferably valid until the end of your studies.)
3. three passport-size photograph
4. Acceptance Letter from the university/college in English and in Hungarian
5. (transit visa if needed)
6. bank receipt of transfer of tuition fee payment or a Payment Certificate from the university or from College International
7. visa fee (equivalent to ca. USD 50)
8. the Embassy may ask for your airplane reservation or fare ticket
9. the Embassy may ask for a proof of accommodation

(In Budapest College International guarantees the accommodation, while in Pécs and Szeged you receive a certificate in Hungarian from the university. Unless you possess a lease contract or a hotel reservation, you should indicate the address of your institution as your address of residence in Hungary.)

Within 15 days after arriving in Hungary you will need to report your Hungarian address to the Municipality Office according your place in the city. You will need an original lease contract in Hungarian, the property page of the apartment and the official housing registration form signed by the owner. Information will be given at registration. In case of moving to another apartment you should report it to the local district authority within 3 days.
